Know your care options before you go

Before you wait for hours in the emergency room (ER) and end up with a sizable bill, there might be options that save you money. In fact, you could save up to $1,500 by choosing an alternative.*

Freestanding ERs and neighborhood hospitals

Many people have been surprised by their bill after visiting a freestanding emergency room or neighborhood hospital. These types of facilities bill at ER rates (or higher) and can be $1,500 or more than an urgent care center. Neither located in nor attached to a hospital, these facilities don’t offer all of the critical services of a hospital ER and do not have the ability to admit patients.

Ask before you enter:

  • Is this an urgent care center or ER?
  • Is this facility a network provider?

The ER isn't your only option

When you need care, call your primary care provider (PCP) or family doctor first. Your PCP has easy access to your records, knows the bigger picture of your health, and may offer same-day appointments. If your PCP isn't available, it's important to know you still have other options.

If you have a life-threatening situation, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital emergency room. But if it's not an emergency, comparing care options could help save you time, money and frustration.

Where to go for care

It’s important to know where to go for the type of care you need. Find out what health care services are available to you. For a complete list of network doctors/providers, search our provider directory.

We contract with several hospitals to offer you the best care, when you need it. Receiving services at a non-contracted hospital may result in you being responsible for hospital charges/bills.

The provider network may change at any time. You will receive notice when necessary.

Out-of-network/non-contracted providers are under no obligation to treat Senior Dimensions members, except in emergency situations. For a decision about whether we will cover an out-of-network service, we encourage you or your provider to ask us for a pre-service organization determination before you receive the service.
